It’s officially 2019, which means now is the time to start looking ahead, making new plans, and establishing new dreams.

The real estate market is like the weather. You can’t entirely predict it, but you can get a good sense of the factors that will push things from one direction to another. Here are three reasons why you should sell your home before the spring:

    1. Low inventory. The winter months are typically the best time of year to sell your home if you want to avoid competition. Many homeowners are waiting until spring and summer to put their homes on the market. If you wait until then to list your home for sale, you’ll have to be more aggressive in pricing your home to stay competitive.
    2. Mortgage rates will likely be higher in the spring. Affording a home will remain tough. Mortgage rates have increased by about 1% over the last year and are now at their highest level since 2011. The trend is likely to continue with mortgage rates expected to go up throughout 2019. With the continued increased rates, affordability can become an issue for most buyers in the market.
    3. Serious buyers. The winter months bring out more serious buyers. Those who are actively looking right now tend to have fewer homes to choose from so they have to make decisions much more quickly. They are also actively looking for properties when the weather is less than favorable and the days are much shorter.

Mortgage rates are expected to go up throughout 2019.
